Girls take Busline League championships; boys are runner-ups
Teams from the boys and girls basketball Busline Leagues played for the championship on January 25 at the Camden-Rockport Middle School.
The Boothbay girls seventh grade team showed early why they were the No. 1 team as they cruised to the championship of the Large School Seventh Grade Division with a solid 46-24 win over Oceanside.
Boothbay led all the way in this one, 14-7, 25-12 and 38-19 before cruising to the championship.
Scoring for Boothbay was Faith Blethan with 12 points; Helen Hamblett and Kate Moore nine each; Maggie Larson and Hannah Gentry six each; and Ashely Abbot four. Boothbay was 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the foul line.
Other members of the championship Boothbay team are, Riley Sullivan, Savannah Sedivy, Maddy Barter, Alexis Davidson, and Carina Peaslee. The team is coached by Jason Lorrain.
For Oceanside Blue, Philomena Marsh had seven points; Kassidy Robinson six; Rachel Joyce five; Brooke Post four; and Anna Poisson two. Oceanside was 3-of-6 (50 percent) from the foul line.
Other members of the runner up Oceanside Blue seventh grade team are Kaycee Foster, Gabby Straka, Gabby Vitale, Hope Butler, Mattie Hooper, Jackie Hall, Rivers Boland, Kaitlin Smith, Mikaila Hickey, Haylee Sylvester, Mara Carpenter and Ella Finger. The coach is Teel Foster.
Eighth Grade Girls
It was a day to remember for the eighth grade girls. Not only were they undefeated for the entire basketball season, they also became champions of the Busline League for the second season in a row, defeating Oceanside, 50-30. Parents and spectators have enjoyed watching this team and look forward to many more seasons.
While the two teams played a closer game the last time they played, this was almost all Boothbay as the Mariners just could not find that shooting touch and Page Brown from Boothbay could not be stopped as she tallied 33 points on the way to wining the eighth grade girls Busline League championship.
Boothbay led after each quarter in this one, 10-6, 22-12 and 36-21 heading into the final quarter of play where Boothbay took care of business and claimed the championship title.
Scoring for Boothbay were, Brown with 33 points; Sydney Meader and Jackie McLoon five each; Sydney Mercier four; and Summer Chamberlain three. Boothbay was 13-of-21 (62 percent) from the foul line.
The rest of the championship Boothbay team is, Denise Stover, Lillian Sherburne, Maddie Gaudette, Jo Shaw, Kylie Michael, Tori Morin and Mady McLellan. The team is coached by John Deetjen.
For Oceanside Blue, Gabby Simmons had 14 points; Casey Pine eight; Jordan Brackett five; Kyleigh Farnham two and Aubrey Anderson one. The Mariners were 9-of-15 (60 percent) from the foul line.
Other members of the Mariners are, Cassidy Boynton, Mackenzie Murray, Emilee Clough, Bailey Nobel, Taylor Hamlin and Lily Morgan. The team is coached by Dan McNichol.
Eighth Grade Boys
The eighth grade boys game was a battle from start to finish, with the Lions coming out on top of this exciting back and forth game.
The two teams played to an 18-18 tie in the first quarter and the Lions took a six-point 35-29 lead into the half time break. By the end of the third quarter the Lions had a 10-point lead 55-45, but had to fight off a solid attempt from Boothbay to come back, falling just short and giving the Lions the championship.
Scoring for Troy Howard were Stanley Sturgis with a game high 36 points; Sam Goguen 10; Aaron Fuller seven; Dakoda Doolan and Tyler Bartlett six; and Skylar Perkins four.
Other members of the Troy Howard team are Shawn Kivlin, Jesse Perry, Trey Reed, Artem Richter, Ricky Smith and Christopher Thayer. The team is coached by Howard Fogg.
For Boothbay, Kyle Ames had 31 points; Eli Gudroe 13; Graham Bryer six; Hunter Arsenault five; Keegan Giles four; and Jay Hasch and Cameron Crocker two each. Boothbay was 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the foul line.
Other members of the Boothbay team are Hayden Brewer, Nick Simpson, Cameron Alley, John Lucas, Riley Johnson and Sam Burnham. The team is coached by Dan Bryer.
