Girls win MVC championship, boys lose
Senior guard Morgan Crocker scored on a layup with less than ten seconds remaining and the Lady Seahawks went on to defeat the Dirigo Cougars, 38-37, in the Mountain Valley Conference championship game at Boothbay Region High School on Thursday, Feb. 12.
The girls' victory was the third of the season over the Cougars, having defeated Dirigo on their home court, 60-47, and at home, 51-42, in January.
Dirigo had taken its first lead, 25-23, at the 4:45 mark of the third quarter, and held a 37-36 lead with 37 seconds to play in the game but Boothbay managed to come up with the winning basket.
In the boys championship game at BRHS following the girls game, the Winthrop Ramblers outplayed Boothbay Region and defeated the Seahawks, 51-37. Boothbay had defeated Winthrop twice this season, at home and on the Ramblers' court.
Winthrop showed a lot of patience on offense and three 3-pointers from Matt Sekerak in the second half propelled the Ramblers to victory. Boothbay committed several turnovers throughout the game.
The four teams could possibly meet again in the upcoming Class C tournament next week.
