Gorey loses in Round of 16
Boothbay Region High School sophomore and boys first singles tennis player Nick Gorey won his Round of 48 state singles match against Ike Doiron of Mt. Blue 6-1, 6-7 (8) and 6-3 May 30. Doiron, a player who would not “go away,” surged in the second set.
Gorey also won his Round of 32 match by default. He was leading 3-2 in the first set against the #11 seed, Liam Hughes of Presque Isle, when thunder and lightning suspended play for the day. Hughes decided to default the match, so that he would be sure the following day to get back to his senior prom in Presque Isle.
"We were disappointed, for Nick wanted to get to the Round of 16 under his own firepower, and I believe he had the game to prevail against Hughes," said his coach and father, Mark Gorey.
In the Round of 16, Nick lost 6-0, 6-0 to the tournament's #6 seed, Ogden Timpson, the top singles player for Scarborough. Nick took multiple games to deuce with Timpson, and in some of their baseline exchanges, they traded 20 plus shots, but Timpson made very few unforced errors.
