Lady Seahawks beat Carrabec
Even with an injured Seahawk, the Boothbay girls varsity team continues to soar above the competition. Boothbay defeated Carrabec 40-20 Friday night without sophomore starter Faith Blethen. She injured her Achilles tendon last week running on ice.
While Blethen rested, her teammates won their ninth consecutive game remaining as the top team in the Class C South Heal Point standings. The Seahawks are having another outstanding season. Last year, Boothbay won 20 consecutive games before losing to Narraguagus in the state championship. For forward Nicole Clarke, going undefeated isn’t the team’s primary goal.
“Without Faith, it changed our rotation so some of us had to play a different position,” Clarke said. “We adjusted and found out what it’s like to play without her.”
Clarke believes her teammates will face and must overcome other challenges if the team wants to achieve its collective goal.
“We all have the goal which is winning the states. Our team has a lot of returning players who all know what it’s like to win every game except the last one,” she said. “So we take each opponent seriously and give it our all each time to prepare us for winning the final game.”
Blethen was expected to return Tuesday against Hall-Dale. She aggravated her Achilles tendon on Jan. 4 against Wiscasset. She tried to play, but the pain worsened each time she ran.
“When I ran the pain got worse so I had to stop. I will probably be ready to play on Monday or Tuesday,” Blethen said.
Boothbay was led in scoring by junior Page Brown with 24. Other Seahawk scorers were Kate Friant, Sydney Meader and Chloe Arsenault with four each, and Hannah Gentry and Alexis Welch each had two.
Carrabec is 2-5 and in 14th place in the Maine Class C South standings. Boothbay improved to 10-0 Jan. 10 defeating Hall-Dale, 50-22. Hall-Dale is 0-10. The Seahawks’ next game is Thursday versus Oak Hill at Porter Memorial Gymnasium.
