Lady Seahawks hope to return to playoffs
Kaitlin Iuzzolino has begun her second season as coach of the Boothbay Region High School field hockey team, and she and her players have been working hard the past two weeks to get ready for season, which began Wednesday, Aug. 29 at home against St. Dom's.
The Lady Seahawks return 15 players, including eight seniors and two juniors. Iuzzolino guided the team to the Eastern Maine Class C playoffs last year. The team finished at 6-8-1 and lost to Winthrop in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
Iuzzolino said she has been trying players at different positions during the preseason with the hope of putting together a full field and filling the spots held by last year's seniors.
“Preseason has consisted of a lot of conditioning and basic skill drills,” said Iuzzolino, a former player for the Lady Seahawks, who graduated in 2005. The team has also met off the field for some “bonding,” making tie-dyed shirts for the scrimmages.
“The team will also be having breakfasts and dinners together during the season,” said Iuzzolino, who took the team kayaking as a team-bonding activity last preseason.
The eight seniors include the team's leading scorer last year, Sarah Caron, as well as Alex Clarke, Arden McSwain, Shaylee Sibley, Krystina Nichols, Anna L'Heureux, Louise Monroe and Jessica Murray, last year's most improved player.
The two juniors include Brooke Alley and Tori Schmid. Schmid earned honorable mention for the Mountain Valley Conference all-star team last season.
The sophomore class includes Shaw Pinkham, Taylor Walby, Nicole LeBrecque, Kirsten Latter and Kanisha KuyKendall.
The new Lady Seahawks include freshmen Nicole Rice, Skylar Davis, Meaghan Oakes and Samantha Carter.
After an away game at Lisbon on Monday, the Lady Seahawks will play its second home game of the season on Perkins Field at Boothbay Region High School on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
