Lady Seahawks lose to Bulldogs in OT
The visiting Hall-Dale Bulldogs made nine of 12 free throws in overtime and held off a comeback by the Lady Seahawks to win, 52-48, January 9 at Boothbay Region High School.
In the four-minute overtime, the Bulldogs scored two quick baskets to take the lead, 43-39, before Boothbay freshman Cagney O'Brien made it 43-41 with a nifty low-post move and basket with about two and a half minutes to play.
Senior Molly French began Hall-Dale's parade to the foul line at the 2:16 mark where she made both free throws in the one-and-one situation. After a missed shot by Boothbay, Dani Sweet made two free throws to give the Bulldogs a six-point lead, 47-41. Morgan Crocker scored on a layup for Boothbay with 1:30 to play, and after one more Hall-Dale free throw, Lady Seahawk guard Sara Durgan made her fifth three-pointer of the game to bring Boothbay to within two, 48-46, with a minute to play. But a couple of missed shots by the Lady Seahawks and four more free throws by Hall-Dale gave the win to the now 5-4 Bulldogs. Boothbay dropped to 4-5 on the season with the loss.
Despite 13 first-half turnovers, Boothbay held a 25-18 lead at the break. A 10-3 run in the second quarter, fueled by three baskets each by Crocker and senior Brooke Alley, gave Boothbay a little breathing space going into the second half.
Hall-Dale took advantage of six more Boothbay turnovers and went on an 11-0 run to finish the third quarter, as the Bulldogs took the lead, 33-28.
In the fourth quarter, Nicole Pelletier gave Hall-Dale its biggest lead, 35-28, after scoring on a layup with 7:25 to play. However, Boothbay began to battle back as Durgan hit back-to-back three-pointers and Crocker scored her first basket of the second half with 2:37 to play to bring Boothbay to within one, 37-36. Free throws by Hall-Dale senior center Allison Crockett gave the visitors a 39-36 lead with 1:12 to play.
After a Boothbay timeout with 38 seconds to play, Crocker nailed a three-pointer off the glass with 33 seconds left to tie the game. Neither team got good looks for shots in the final seconds so the game went into overtime.
Crocker led Boothbay with 19 points, followed by Durgan with 15 and Alley, 8.
Hall-Dale was led by Pelletier with 18 points, followed by Crockett and Sweet with 10 each.
In the junior varsity game, Boothbay won, 35-31.
