Lady Seahawks miss tournament first time in 12 years
The Lady Seahawks won one gold ball, reached two state championship games, and had two players named tournament most valuable players the past two decades. But there were no tournament memories for Boothbay in 2022. Here’s a look back at 20 years of Lady Seahawk tournament memories:
In 2001, Boothbay beat Winthrop, 46-39, in the quarterfinals. Katie Sibley scored 15 points. In the semis, Boothbay lost to Dirigo, 56-35. This earned the Cougars their seventh straight appearance in the regional final. Boothbay’s Emily Harrison scored 16 points. Boothbay finished 16-5.
In 2002, Boothbay defeated Livermore, 61-35, in the quarters. Sibley led the team in scoring with 15. In the semis, Winthrop eliminated Boothbay, 45-37. Sibley scored 23 points and hit the 1,000-point career plateau with a second period layup. Boothbay finished 17-4.
In 2003, the Lady Seahawks reached the regional final. Boothbay lost to perennial regional champion Dirigo, 76-39. The Cougars used a triangle-and-two defense against Sibley and limited her to nine points. Boothbay reached the final by defeating Mt. Abram in the quarters, 60-47, and Winthrop in the semis, 76-48. Sibley scored 45 points against Winthrop and set a western regional tournament record. Boothbay finished 15-6.
In 2004, the Lady Seahawks finished 12-8, and lost to No. 12 Georges Valley, 52-47, in the preliminary round. Kayley Gallagher scored 12 points in the loss.
In 2005, No. 7 Boothbay bowed out in the quarterfinals to Hall-Dale, 52-47. The Lady Seahawks led with five minutes remaining, but the Bulldogs rallied. Gallagher scored 11. Boothbay finished 13-7.
In 2006, the Lady Seahawks finished 7-11, and missed the playoffs for the first time in four years.
In 2007, Boothbay lost to No. 2 Monmouth, 51-34, in the preliminary round, and finished 5-13.
In 2008, the Lady Seahawks finished 1-17; in 2009, 3-15; and in 2010, 2-16, each year missing the playoffs.
In 2011, the Lady Seahawks finished 9-9 in 13th place and missed the playoffs.
In 2012, Boothbay qualified for the tournament, and beat Mt. Abram, 58-42. Sarah Caron scored 23 points. In the semis, Waynflete eliminated Boothbay, 78-61. The Flyers’ Martha Veroneau scored 47 points, eclipsing Sibley’s 45 set in 2003.
In 2013, the Lady Seahawks defeated St. Dom’s, 43-37, in the quarterfinals. Morgan Crocker scored 17 points. In the semis, Waynflete eliminated Boothbay, 73-52. Alex Clarke scored 19. Boothbay finished 17-3.
In 2014, Boothbay lost to Old Orchard Beach in the preliminary round, 59-46. The Lady Seahawks finished 7-12.
In 2015, the Lady Seahawks entered tournament play seeded second. Boothbay lost to No. 10 Madison, 43-41. With nine seconds remaining, Madison sunk two free throws to win the game. Morgan Crocker scored 23 points. Boothbay finished 18-2.
In 2016, Boothbay won the regional championship defeating Madison, 40-24. In the quarters, Boothbay defeated Carrabec, 32-17. In the semifinal round, it was the first of three straight tournament encounters with Monmouth. Boothbay won round one 36-34 and advanced to the regional final. In the first two tournament games, Faith Blethen led the team in scoring with 16 versus Carrabec and 15 against Monmouth. Against Madison, Page Brown scored 19 and was named regional tournament MVP. Boothbay lost to Narraguagus, 33-25, in the state championship game in Augusta. Blethen was her team’s leading scorer with nine. Boothbay finished 20-2.
In 2017, the Lady Seahawks entered the tournament with a 17-1 record. In the quarters, Boothbay defeated Mt. Abram, 60-21. Blethen and Brown each scored 15. In the semis, Boothbay and Monmouth clashed for their second of three consecutive tournament meetings. This time, the Mustangs won, 39-30, and went on to win the state championship. Brown was her team’s top scorer with 15. Boothbay finished 18-2.
In 2018, Monmouth beat Boothbay for the second year in a row, and later won its second straight gold ball. Monmouth won 51-47 in the regional final. Blethen led her team with 21 points. In the quarters, Boothbay defeated Traip, 59-40. Brown scored 24, In the semis, Boothbay beat Madison, 53-45. Brown scored 17 points. Boothbay finished 21-1.
In 2019, Boothbay won it all, for the first time in 35 years. Boothbay finished the season undefeated at 22-0. But its quarterfinal encounter with Saint Dom’s was challenging. Boothbay won, 32-26. Chloe Arsenault scored 11. In the semis, Madison fell to Boothbay, 55-23. Glory Blethen scored 20. In the regional final, Boothbay beat North Yarmouth Academy, 49-31. Faith Blethen scored 13 and was named tournament MVP. Boothbay won the state title by overcoming a nine-point deficit. Boothbay beat Penobscot Valley of Howland, 33-25. Faith Blethen was her team’s leading scorer with 13.
In 2020, it was the first time the Lady Seahawks entered the season without Page Brown or Faith Blethen, the last two Class C South tournament MVPs. But the defending state champion still had a glorious season. Boothbay entered the tournament 16-2. Boothbay defeated Sacopee Valley, 55-35, in the quarters. Jaelyn Crocker led her team with 15 points. Boothbay later beat Traip, 46-32, to earn a third consecutive trip to the regional final. Glory Blethen scored 18. In the final, Winthrop won the regional title with a 38-34 victory. Arsenault led the team in scoring with 20.
In 2021, there was no Maine Principals’ Association Invitational state tournament due to COVID-19.
