Lady Seahawks win first match against Wiscasset
It was a solid win for the Lady Seahawks tennis team in the first match of the season, 4-1, against Wiscasset's Lady Wolverines on April 22. The Seahawks bested the Wolverines last season as well.
The team had the home game advantage playing in the YMCA's Marylouise Cowan Tandy field house. All of the home matches will be played at the field house until the new outdoor tennis courts are ready for action next spring.
“They all started out very rusty and slow moving from the vacation break,” Coach Alex Arsenault said. “But after three to four games they really got playing their style of tennis.”
In the singles matches, Boothbay senior and team captain Shaylee Sibley won 10-6 against Miranda McIntyre; senior Jessie Vander lost to Wolverine Maeve Carlson, 9-11; and senior/captain Alison Cook beat Hanna Foyer 10-8.
“Both Shaylee and Alison played incredibly hard to win their singles matches and served an extremely high percentage,” Arsenault said.
Boothbay won all of the doubles matches: junior Dana Greenleaf and freshman Angela Machon scored 11-10 (7-4) against Wolverines Hannah Welborn and Alexa Burns; freshman MacKenzie Colby and junior Chloe Hoecker scored 10-3 against Sam Arsenault and Kennedy Orr.
Arsenault found it “very encouraging” to see Machon with the ability to play her first match, handle the pressure and then win.
Upcoming games: April 24 at Dirigo, the “showdown” according to Arsenault; the team lost twice to the Cougars last year. Friday, April 26 is a home match against Lisbon's Lady Greyhounds at 4 p.m.; Monday, April 29 at Monmouth, and Wednesday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in the field house against Mt. Abram's Lady Roadrunners.
