Lisbon ousts Boothbay Region from Class D playoffs
It seems the Lisbon Greyhounds could nothing wrong in their football playoff game Oct. 31 against Boothbay Region. Lisbon scored touchdowns on all five first half possessions and the Greyhound defense didn’t allow a first down until midway through the third quarter. No. 3 Lisbon (6-2) overpowered No. 6 Boothbay Region (2-6) 33-8 at Thompson Field.
In Lisbon’s first three possessions, the Greyhounds ran the ball 30 straight times in running out to a 21-0 lead. Greyhound running back Noah Francis ran 15 yards to score the touchdown. The Greyhounds went 59 yards in 11 plays. Quarterback Tyler Halls scored the next two Greyhound touchdowns. Halls ran a quarterback sweep 15 yards around the Boothbay Region defense for the second score, and ran an 11-yard draw for the third.
Touchdowns four and five were through the air. Halls connected with wide receiver Caleb Little on a 22-yard pass. And with 41.1 seconds remaining in the half, Halls threw an 11-yard pass to wide receiver Henry Adams giving Lisbon a 33-0 lead.
Each first half offensive series had the same result for Boothbay Region: three and out. The Seahawks went to a Wildcat formation in the second series. But that strategy didn’t fool the Greyhound defense. Linebacker Blake Berube blitzed on first down and threw Abel Bryer for a seven-yard loss.
This was the second meeting of the season between the two Campbell Conference foes. On Oct. 2, Lisbon shut out Boothbay Region 19-0 in Lisbon Falls. In four of their first five losses, Boothbay Region failed to score. But victories in the regular season’s final two games, including an 8-6 upset victory Oct. 23 against Winthrop-Monmouth, seemed to catch the Greyhounds’ attention.
“They were fired up and came to play today,” said Bryer. “We were fired up too, but they studied game film of our game against Winthrop and they definitely were ready for us.”
Bryer scored the Seahawks’ only touchdown. Quarterback Duncan Drapeau hit the split end with a 68-yard fourth quarter pass. Bryer ran a “Four Route” in eluding two defenders. Bryer ran two yards downfield and faked to the sideline. Two Greyhound defenders went for the fake, and Bryer went deep.
“It’s the same play we used in the fourth quarter against Winthrop,” Bryer said. “The defenders got confused and once I caught the pass I ran the way I do in track season.”
Boothbay Region coach Bryan Dionne credited Lisbon for being a talented and well-coached team.
“We just faced a better team today,” he said. “Their defense is fast and aggressive and runs to the ball very well. They also have a lot of weapons on offense.”
Dionne also credited his team for overcoming adversity this season.
“I told them how proud I was of them,” Dionne said. “This team overcame a lot this year to finish sixth. We also beat one of the conference’s top teams on their home field. This team has a lot to be proud of. ”
Lisbon’s victory was also the 200th for coach Richard Mynahan. The Greyhounds face No. 2 Dirigo (7-2) of Dixfield in the Class South D semifinals next weekend.
