Maulolo and Carter earn state wrestling runner-up honors
Two Bucksport wrestlers dashed the hopes of Boothbay Region’s Antonio Maulolo and Howie Carter of winning 2015 Class C State individual championships.
Bucksport wrester J.P. Hillaire ended Maulolo’s two-year reign as the 220-pound champion with a 6-1 victory.
And Bucksport’s Matt Stewart won the 160-pound championship with a 7-4 victory over Carter.
Maulolo and Carter were Boothbay Region High School’s best chances to win individual state championships. Maulolo — trying for his third straight 220-pound championship — was seeded first, and Carter was seeded second in the 160-pound class.
Both match-ups pitted the two top seeds against each other in the championship match. Maulolo was the state’s top seed by virtue of his victory over Hillaire in the state seeding tournament held on Feb. 7. Carter lost to Stewart for the second consecutive week.
The State Class C wrestling championships were held in Bucksport on Feb. 14. Dirigo, of Dixfield, won the team championship with 211.5 points, which topped runner-up Dexter’s 155. Boothbay Region finished eighth in the state championship competition, scoring 38 points.
Boothbay Region had two other wrestlers place in the top four. Draco Peaslee finished third in the 145-pound and Dylan Peters placed fourth in 132-pound divisions.
Boothbay Region was never in contention to win the team state championship. The Seahawks only sent six wrestlers to compete in the 14-weight divisions.
Boothbay Region coach Allan Crocker believed his undermanned squad did well by placing eighth in the 15-team competition.
“I think everybody wrestled great today. Nobody has a reason to hang their head. They all competed hard and did their best,” Crocker said.
Team depth and talent dominated the state meet. Dirigo filled 11 of the 14-weight classes. While runner-up Dexter (155) filled 10. Nine Dirigo wrestlers reached the final round with four winning state championships. Dexter won four out their five championship matches.
This was the last Class C wrestling meet. The Maine Principals’ Association announced this year to condense the state’s three wrestling classes into two.
