McLellan scores first goal against St. Dom’s
Boothbay Region High School girls soccer forward Mady McLellan scored her first varsity goal on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to match the three by St. Dom’s Faith Grady. The St. Dom’s prevailed 3-1 in a Mountain Valley Conference girls’ soccer game at Clifford Field.
With the Seahawks trailing 1-0, McLellan received a pass from midfielder Lindsey Buckingham about six yards from the goal. She spun around, and fired the ball with her left foot past St. Dom’s goal keeper Nicole Robidoux. This tied the score with 17 minutes remaining in the first half.
For McLellan scoring her first goal was all a blur.
“It all happened so fast I don’t really remember much about it,” McLellan said. “I was just in the right place.”
The loss was the Seahawks’ sixth straight to start the season. Despite the loss, Boothbay Region coach Kim Dionne sees a lot of good things happening on the field. She said Boothbay Region “played a really good game against a really good team.” St. Dom’s is 5-1 and ranked No. 4 in Western Maine Class C girls’ soccer.
“As the season progresses we’re doing everything better,” she said. “We covering the other team. We’re passing and communicating. We are just playing against other teams who are more experienced and do everything a little bit better than us.”
The Seahawks were out shot 20-7. Boothbay Region goal keeper Jamie Wheeler had five saves. St. Dom’s goal keeper Nicole Robidoux made one.
The Seahawks lost both games played this week. Mount Ararat defeated Boothbay Region 4-1 on Sept. 19. Seahawk forward Courtney Brewer headed in the team’s only goal.
Boothbay Region next two games are on the road. The Seahawks play Winthrop on Sept. 24 and travel to North Anson on Sept. 26 for a game with Carrabec. Boothbay Region returns home on Sept. 30 to play Hall-Dale.
