Morley wins Hood scholarship
Boothbay Region High School senior standout Hannah Morley has added to her accomplishments by winning the $5,000 Hood Milk Sportsmanship Scholarship. Morley is one of just 18 students in New England to receive the honor which will be presented in a May 15 ceremony at the TD Garden in Boston, home to both the Celtics and Bruins.
To be eligible for the scholarship, high school seniors must have proven their ability to put the spirit of sportsmanship above winning while participating in a varsity sport. Students also must have earned a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher and performed volunteer work in the community. Voting for the scholarship was conducted online via hood.com and ran from January through April 22. People could vote every day if they chose, according to scholarship guidelines.
“It felt pretty amazing,” said Morley. “Especially knowing I had the support of the community behind me. I am so thankful to everyone who voted.”
In this case, Morley has far exceeded the requirements. She is the senior class president and salutatorian; a member of the student council and the Interact Club, a youth group of the Rotary Club; President of the YMCA Leaders Club; and a student representative on the YMCA Board of Trustees. In 2015, Morley was honored as the Boothbay Region YMCA Youth of the Year, and she was chosen as a delegate to Girls State and went to Washington, D.C. as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Most recently, she gained statewide attention as the co-captain of the BHRS girls basketball team that won the Class C South championship in March.
In February, Morley was awarded the Maine Principals Award, and was named to the McDonald's Senior All-Star basketball team and the All-Star Senior academic teams.
Morley was also named the April/May honoree of the Channel 6 Teens Who Care award.
