Mountain Valley Falcons soar past Seahawks, 31-0
Seahawk baseball (0-2) was overmatched both at the plate and on the mound by a strong Mountain Valley High School team (2-0)on Thursday, April 25.
“They are a well-coached and disciplined team,” Seahawk Assistant Coach Bill Mansfield said before the game.
Mansfield said the Seahawks were faced with a compacted schedule due to rainouts.
“We have four games in five days,” he said. Mansfield said he has 11 players capable of pitching although for some it would be the first time on the mound.
“We have to throw strikes,” and walks tend to run up the pitch count, he said.
The Falcons wasted no time taking advantage of Seahawk pitching and fielding errors, scoring nine runs against starter Brett Hollowell. He was replaced by a succession of relievers: Matt Sullivan, Owen Barter, Sam Page, Jordan Carrier and Mark Bayaca who in total gave up 31 runs in the five-inning, shortened event.
Of the relievers, freshman Jordan Carrier showed poise and power slowing the Falcon onslaught.
Falcons pitcher senior Fischer Cormier faced only nine batters in two innings with four strikeouts. He was replaced by Anthony Mazza who struck out three batters in short order. Will Bean closed out the contest.
Helping the Seahawk coaching team was former longtime coach Jon Hodgdon who volunteered to keep score.
“They wanted to know if I could help out,” said Hodgdon.
Hodgdon had coached baseball for 18 years all the way from Little League to the Boothbay Region High School varsity. After his retirement in 1999, he continued as an assistant coach for another eight years.
”It is the best game there is,” said Hodgdon.
