New coach, new players begin 2021 season
A former Boothbay Region High School field hockey player has taken over as head coach of the 2021 BRHS team – a young squad but one that has some experience under former coach Donna Jordan.
Alison Sirois has a roster of 15 players and said she is happy about what she’s seen so far this preseason. The team will be led by senior tri-captains Jaelyn Crocker, Emily Echols and Mara Gentry. The junior class contingent includes Sydney Blake, Savannah Compare and Meghan Leeman. Five sophomores, Ariel Alamo, Avery Barter, Kari Blake, Charlotte Fuchswanz and Margaret Sledge, and four freshmen, Magen Burge, Abbie Clark, Lily Nein and Cassie Leeman, complete the roster.
“Our defense looks strong and this week we have been working on our offense plays and skills,” said Sirois. Crocker will return as goalie, a position she has held the past three seasons, while anchoring the defense will be Sledge and Sydney Blake, said Sirois.
Besides playing field hockey in elementary and high school in Boothbay region schools, Sirois played intramural field hockey in college in Colorado. Sirois graduated from BRHS in 1991 and was co-captain of the field hockey team her junior and senior years.
On Sept. 2, Sirois announced that Julia Latter, another former BRHS field hockey player, will be her assistant.
“I heard the school needed a coach so I applied,” said Sirois. “I like the idea of returning home and coaching at BRHS. I am honored to be able to do this.”
The Seahawks played at the Belfast play day last week and open the season Sept. 1 at Telstar.
“I am hoping we win some games,” said Sirois.
