New coach, new season for BRHS softball
It’s that time of year! Put away your bleacher seats and get out your lawn chairs, sunglasses and bug spray. Spring sports are here and the 2013 Boothbay Region High School softball team is fired up for the upcoming season. Under the direction of new head coach, Heather O’Brien, the players have been working hard with conditioning skills, defensive strategies and continuing education on the mental aspects of the game.
There is a great line-up of athletic talent on the team this year. Even though the roster is short, each player has something specific to contribute, whether it is the ability to pitch a rise ball over the plate, a powerful swing to bring in the runs, or the aggressive determination to never let a ground ball get by you.
O’Brien said she understands that the past has brought some challenges to the team in getting more checks in the win column. However, seeing the determination in these players to continue with the program despite the past seasons shows the passion that these girls have for the sport and the will to try and turn out a winning season both on and off the field.
O’Brien also feels that it is important for the players to understand the value of giving back to their community. This year, the team is excited to become part of the 2013 Rebuilding Together Volunteer Day on May 11. Learning to work together as a team both on and off the field builds more character and understanding of teamwork than any one single practice can.
