News and notes from the Community Center

I can’t believe it’s almost the end of May! Time is flying by. Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day, a federal holiday. History lesson: Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. It started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War, which was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, Decoration Day was extended to commemorate all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, however the current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II, but was not declared the official name by federal law until 1967.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/ and https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/memorial-day.)  The Community Center will be closed.

For all of you who read the Morning Catch, Richard Plunkett, the Wizard of Odds and Ends and an antique dealer, will lead us on a “Hidden Treasures” Architectural Tour May 22. We will leave The Community Center around 10:30 in the morning, have a “Dutch-Treat Lunch” at a café, tour the buildings, and return to Boothbay about 2:30-3 pm. Rain date will be Friday, May 24.  Richard is so looking forward to telling you about the history of this area. Space is limited. So please, please come to The Community Center to sign up. We need a head count for transportation!

Judy Milinowski, who has led our QiGong class here this past winter, told me that she is suspending her QiGong classes here for the summer, BUT, she will be offering QiGong in Barrett’s Park again this summer, beginning Monday June 3rd and continuing June 7th and then every Monday and Friday thereafter through September.  These classes will be free, but of course, donations are welcome.

More signs of summer: Pat McKee is also suspending her classes for the summer until the fall. During the summer, Pat will be holding her classes at the Spruce Point Inn.

Sneak Preview: On July 2, The Community Center will hold a fundraising Pie/Cake Bake Sale outside in the parking lot of the Small Mall. We plan on having many pies, cakes, fudge, and other sweets available for sale.  All proceeds will benefit The Community Center. Calories are nonexistent on July 2. I’m sure you will all have too many guests to feed over the 4th of July weekend, so this is a great time to stock up, and you will not have to clean up your kitchen!
