Oak Hill edges Boothbay, 2-1
The Boothbay Region High School girls soccer team continues to improve, while looking for its first win of the season.
Coach Ben Powell offered the following report on the Sept. 8 game against Oak Hill at Oak Hill.
“The girls played their best game of the season tonight. Oak Hill is always strong and our defense was able to keep them in check for most of the game.“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game with a goal in the first few minutes by Annie Bryer. She chipped it over the keeper from just inside the penalty area. It was one of the most creative goals I’ve seen in a long time. Unfortunately Oak Hill tied it up quickly and was able to take a 2-1 lead with one minute left in the half.
“The goal at halftime was to lock down defensively and give our strikers a few chances to tie up the game. We did just this, Oak Hill had some good chances but the defense held strong and kept them scoreless. There were a few opportunities in the second half on offense, but unfortunately we weren’t able to capitalize. I say this every week, but it's true again tonight. We’ve improved every game and with our schedule softening up next week I’m expecting a win or two.
“There are a few standout performances I’d like to recognize. Jackie McLoon had a phenomenal game in goal. She make a handful of spectacular saves and was always in the right position. She also did a great job communicating with the defense. Annie Bryer has come a long way from when I first coached her sophomore year, and I am so proud of her goal tonight. She plays with aggressiveness and has a nose for the goal. I’m confident this won’t be the last time she scores this season.
“I’m pretty sure Madison Gaudette has played every single minute of every game we’ve played so far this year. She is a stabilizing force in our defense and plays with a solid defensive technique.”
The Lady Seahawks are scheduled to face Mt. Abram at Mt. Abram on Sept. 12 and Dirigo at home on Thursday, Sept. 14.
