Phoenix down Boothbay
The Spruce Mountain Phoenix defeated the Boothbay Region Seahawks, 3-1, at Perkins Field, BRHS on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
Boothbay got on the scoreboard first with a first quarter goal by senior co-captain Kari Blake at the 10:19 mark.
The game then swung in Spruce Mountain's favor as the visitors put pressure on the Seahawk defense. Senior co-captain Aubrey Kachnovich scored the tying goal with 3:56 to go in the first quarter.
The Seahawks defense played well but its offense couldn't get many opportunities to score in the final three quarters, managing only two shots on goal.
The game remained tied until halfway through the fourth quarter when a penalty was called which gave the Phoenix a penalty stroke. Brooklyn Fournier pushed the ball past Boothbay goalie Cass Amaral to give Spruce Mountain the lead at 7:03.
A late goal by co-captain Olive Mastine at 2:26 gave the Phoenix the second win over Boothbay this season. Earlier this season, Spruce Mountain won at home, 11-1.
"We played much better, and I am proud of the girls for their effort," said Seahawk coach Skyler Davis.
Spruce Mountain improved to 9-1 and sits atop the Class C South Heal point standings.
Boothbay dropped to 2-8. The Seahawks next host the Dirigo Cougars on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
