A primer on the 'Guagus Lady Knights
Who are the Narraguagus Lady Knights?
Boothbay Region High School will be taking on the Narraguagus Lady Knights in the state Class C girls basketball championship on Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
According to BRHS Coach Tanner Grover, the Lady Knights are an "athletic team that likes to transition and score." Grover said he hasn't seen them in a live situation, "which helps a little bit when trying to gain some perspective," but had seen all of their playoff opponents live.
"I was really impressed with how they handled Penobscot Valley, a very good basketball team," said Grover.
The Lady Knights are 18-3 and won their first-ever regional title. The school has never won a basketball gold ball (boys or girls).
Here is their roster:
- Four seniors: No. 20: Kelli Kennedy, 5-11 center, 1,000-point scorer; No. 13: Emily Reynolds, 5-2 guard; No. 14: Cassidy Osgood, 5-9 forward; No. 44: Britny Look, 5-7 forward
- Three juniors: No. 22: Kayla Toppin, 5-6 forward; No. 24: Caitlin Reynolds, 5-3 guard; No. 40: Hannah Alley, 5-9 forward
- Two sophomores: No. 11: Shi Lynn Weed, 5-4 guard; No. 10: Madison Leighton, 5-2 guard
- Four freshmen: No. 12: Keanna Reynolds, 5-2 guard; No. 30: Lanie Perry, 5-2 guard; No. 32: Madison Pray, 5-4 guard; No. 54: Kylee Joyce, 5-6 forward
Kennedy, Osgood, Leighton and Toppin were the top scorers this season, according to box scores garnered through research, and Kennedy, Joyce and Osgood are their top rebounders.
Kennedy and Toppin made the Bangor Daily News' all-tournament team for Class C, with Kennedy receiving the Owen O. Osborne most valuable player award. Osgood and Joyce received honorable mention.
Against their tournament opponents, the Lady Knights used an effective 1-3-1 zone in the championship game against Penobscot Valley; used a diamond and one, full- or 3/4-court press against Dexter in the semifinal, forcing 35 turnovers.
"Kennedy appears to be a heck of a player; very athletic and finishes well around the hoop," said Grover. "But I wouldn't call them a one-person show at all. Osgood is clearly a very good wing player, and Toppin is a proven 3-point shooter hitting four in their quarterfinal against Piscataquis.
"We will have to prepare for their various traps. Valuing the ball will be key. They certainly have a way of capitalizing on turnovers.
"I can't really compare them to another team we've seen this season. It will be a fun challenge!"
