Rev. Martin Smith to lead All Saints services July 21, 28

    Well-known throughout the Episcopal Church as a writer, retreat leader, spiritual advisor and teacher, the Rev. Martin Smith will lead services at All Saints by-the-Sea on Southport Island for the next two weeks. Holy Communion will be offered at 8 and 10 a.m. on July 21 and at 8 a.m. on July 28. Rev. Smith will preside over the service of Morning Prayer at 10 a.m. on July 28. Mr. Henry Lowe will provide our music for all services. People of all faiths are invited to attend the services.

    Born in England, Rev. Smith received his BA and MA at Oxford University. After ordination, he served several parishes as well as the Society of St. John the Evangelist, the oldest religious order for men in the Anglican Communion. He transferred to the American branch of the Society in 1979. Rev. Smith retired from St. Columba’s Church in Washington, D.C. in 2012. Since then, he is in demand as a teacher and workshop leader where his engaging style and vast knowledge have enriched countless spiritual seekers. He has authored numerous books on contemporary spirituality. Maine holds a special place in his heart and he views the Boothbay region as a special summer home.

    Tuesday morning porch discussions with Rev. Smith are always a highlight of the season with Rev. Smith sharing his many insights and reflections on the weekly scriptures as well as other spiritual topics with those in attendance. These discussions will take place Tuesday, July 23 and July 30 from 9 to 10 a.m. Attendees of All Saints as well as members of other area church are encouraged to attend.

    All Saints by-the-Sea is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about two miles on the left driving south on Route 238. An Episcopal Church sign marks the side of the road. Parking is available along Route 238, or if necessary, in the limited number of handicapped parking spaces off All Saints Road. A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped lot to the church steps. Due to winter storm damage, the church dock is not currently available. The very beautiful and simple wood chapel is open for quiet prayer and meditation during the week.
