Richmond edges Boothbay, 60-54
The Richmond Bobcats took a lead in the second quarter and, despite the Seahawks battling back to tie the game at 44-44 with 4:31 to play, Richmond went on to defeat Boothbay, 60-54, at Boothbay Region High School Wednesday night, Feb. 8.
Richmond, which finished the season at 15-2, made 13 of 21 free throws in the final quarter to seal the victory. Boothbay crept to within a game tying 3-pointer late in the game but some missed shots and some subsequent fouls committed by the Seahawks against Richmond gave the visitors the win.
Boothbay, which fell to 12-6 with the loss, committed several turnovers in the second quarter which Richmond capitalized on to grab the lead going into halftime, 25-19.
The Bobcats led after three quarters, 37-33, and the final quarter there was a flurry of scoring, tough defense and rebounding.
Drew Meader and Gryffin Kristan tried to get Boothbay back in the game in the final quarter, with Meader nailing three 3-pointers and Kristan had two. But Kristan, the team’s leading scorer who sat out most of the third quarter in foul trouble, fouled out with 2:07 to play.
A couple of 3-pointers by Richmond’s Hunter Mason in the final quarter and the team’s free throw shooting success gave the visitors the victory.
According to the latest Heal point standings, Boothbay slipped from sixth place to seventh and Richmond moved up from fifth place to fourth in Class C South. The final rankings and tournament pairings are expected to be done by the weekend with the regular season finishing up today, Feb. 9.
Mason led Richmond with 20 points. Connor Vashon, who made seven of nine free throws in the final quarter, finished with 13 points. Kenny Mecham added 11 and Max Viselli had eight.
Meader led Boothbay with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Kristan added 13 points, followed by Finn Harkins with 10 and Luke Morley with nine.
