Roads End welcomes new feathered neighbors
The pond on Roads End in Boothbay Harbor is home once again to a few baby ducklings, paddling around in the shallow water.
“One day I came outside and there they were, swimming behind their mom,” Roads End resident Michael Tomko said. “I was glad to see that even with the issues the pond has had, they still came back.”
One issue Tomko is referring to is the fact that the pond is slowly filling in over time. There has been concern from residents that new housing construction being done on Sunset Road in the Harbor, about 650 feet from the pond, was causing an increase levels of silt in the pond.
Boothbay Harbor Town Manager Tom Woodin and Code Enforcement Officer Geoff Smith have already visited the construction site, and the contractor has installed hay bales to deal with any possible erosion.
It appears likely that the increase in silt in the pond has more to do with natural sediments flowing into the pond from its small stream and the increased runoff that occurs during heavy rainfall.
The Roads End community appears thrilled to have new ducklings in the pond. The ducklings are already learning about the nice people who bring them cracked corn and bread crumbs. If you drive down Roads End, be sure to take note of the sign reading “Caution: Baby Ducks.”
