Sarah Caron wins All-Star 3-point shooting contest
Boothbay Region High School Seahawk senior Sarah Caron has always been a focus of concern for conference basketball coaches because she can shoot “the three.”
Her years of perfecting her long-range shooting paid off this past weekend as Caron defeated six other players in Classes A-D to win the 3-point shooting contest at the Maine McDonald's Senior All-Star weekend at Husson College in Bangor.
Caron made fourteen 3-pointers in 60 seconds to win the contest going away.
“I got hot, making four 3-pointers from the top of the key,” said Caron. “That started my run and I passed the leader, who had made 11, in the fourth rack of balls.” Contestants could shoot a total of 25 shots in 60 seconds from both baselines, both wings and from the top of the arc.
“I was the last one to shoot, which is what I wanted because I always like to set goals for myself,” said Caron, daughter of Tom and Wendy Caron of Boothbay Harbor.
Caron, who wants to study biology and perhaps play basketball at Wheaton College, was presented a plaque as the contest winner.
The contest was a warm-up for the all-star game for Caron. She and fellow Lady Seahawk Alex Clarke were chosen by league coaches to participate in the game. Caron and Clarke each played well for the West C/D senior all stars, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively, but the East C/D team won the game, 74-70. Caron made two 3-pointers during the game.
“The game was awesome,” said Caron. “You get to play with players you normally compete against during the season.”
Caron said playing alongside Waynflete's Martha Veroneau was a treat. Veroneau was named Miss Maine Basketball 2013 as the top female player in the state. Veroneau and the Waynflete Flyers knocked the Lady Seahawks out of the Western Maine Class C tournament in 2012 and 2013.
“She was setting me up for shots during the game,” Caron said. “She usually has to take most of the shots in the game, but she was willing to set us up.”
One other highlight for Caron was visiting the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor. The facility is available for families whose children are undergoing medical treatments in nearby hospitals.
This year marked the 25th year for the Senior All-Star games which are held to raise money for Ronald McDonald Charities of Maine and the goal was to raise $25,000.
“Seeing the kids and their families and what they are going through makes you appreciate what you have,” Caron said.
