The garden adorning the entrance to Southport Town Hall now has a granite sculpture standing among an array of flowers. The Bill Royall sculpture, “The Moon and The Stars,” was installed the week of May 31.

Boothbay Region Garden Club member Clair Tomlin reached out to Royall about the possibility of having a sculpture installed there. Royall is well-known for his art, and for inspiring the creation of the Boothbay Region Sculpture Trail.

After approval from Southport’s selectboard, “The Moon and The Stars” found a new display space. The granite artwork was formerly installed in the gardens at the former Ocean Point Inn, now Bluebird Ocean Point Inn.

The sculpture is the 37th on the Boothbay Region Sculpture Trail founded in 2017 by Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce. The Trail’s official opening was in June 2018. Since then, these outdoor artworks in granite, marble, bronze, steel and metal have been installed in all the towns on the peninsula.

“This is a free public art project accessible 24/7 every day of the year and supported by local businesses,” Royall noted.

All sculptures on the Trail – except for Mitch S. Billis’s bronze on the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library lawn –  is for sale and all proceeds go directly to the artist.

Trail maps are at the Chamber, 97 Townsend Ave. and at the businesses where the sculptures have  been installed.
