Seahawk football rolls to third victory
The Boothbay Seahawks rolled up 380 yards in total offense, scored five offensive and one defensive touchdown and recorded a safety, in defeating Androscoggin Valley Football Club of Berlin, New Hampshire, 41-18, Sept. 16 at Sherman Field.
This was the Seahawks’ third straight victory to start the club football season. After two straight lopsided victories over Camden Hills, Androscoggin Valley appeared to be the Seahawks’ first real test of the season. But after an impressive opening drive, which saw the Gladiators move the ball from their own 33-yard line down to the Seahawk 10, the Gladiators offense stalled. Boothbay scored 41 straight points before Androscoggin Valley scored midway in the third quarter.
Boothbay coach Bryan Dionne described Androscoggin Valley as a team which presented several challenges to his squad. The Gladiators appeared to have a size and speed advantage, which they used in their passing attack in the opening drive.
“Their quarterback is really good. He has a good arm and his receivers are very fast,” Dionne said. “They had us on our heels to start, but we did a good job in regaining our focus, which led us to stopping them before they scored.”
The Seahawks nearly scored on their opening drive, but lost a fumble on the goal line. Two plays later, it was Androscoggin Valley who fumbled, resulting in the Seahawks scoring the game’s first points with a safety.
Later in the first quarter, Seahawk running back Bryan Otero scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns, giving Boothbay a 10-0 lead. Other Seahawks who scored offensive touchdowns were running back Draco Peaslee on a seven-yard run and Zach Blackman with a two-yard run. Defensive lineman Cameron Crocker scooped up a Gladiator fumble in the third quarter and scored a touchdown.
Dionne credited his team’s ability to focus as a key factor in its ability to win during a trying time.
“It was a difficult week for them, but they did a good job staying focused. They continue to improve each week and I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made,” Dionne said.
The Seahawks’ next game is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 against Sacopee Valley in Hiram.
