Seahawks fall to South Portland in Gold Rush championship
At the Gold Rush basketball tournament at the Augusta Civic Center Wednesday, the Boothbay Region High School girls varsity defeated the Class B Poland Regional High School Knights and the Class A Messalonskee Eagles before falling to the Class AA South Portland Red Riots in the championship game.
Boothbay 61 Poland 52
Junior Faith Blethen scored 22 points, followed by senior Page Brown with 21 and freshman Glory Blethen with 10.
For Poland, Nathalie Theriault scored 18, Lexy Grondin, eight, and Sarah Moody, six.
Boothbay trailed after three quarters, 46-44, but held the Knights to only six fourth quarter points to win the game.
Boothbay 56 Messalonskee 51
Brown and Faith Blethen scored 23 and 22 points, respectively, to lead the Seahawks to victory.
A strong third quarter, where the Seahawks outscored the Eagles, 19-13, provided the difference in the close game.
Ally Turner with 14 points and Emily Parent with 11 were the Eagles’ leading scorers.
South Portland 69 Boothbay 33
In the championship game, the Red Riots cruised past the Seahawks. Faith Blethen led all scorers with 17 points.
South Portland was led by Jena Leckie and Cora Boothby-Akilo with 12 points each.
“I was so proud of how our girls competed with the bigger schools. This was a great workout for us on the Civic Center floor and helps us prepare for the MPA tournament in February,” said BRHS Coach Brian Blethen via email.
Today, Dec. 28, Boothbay travels to Telstar for conference play and then return to the Civic Center on Friday for two more non-conference games.
