Seahawks move on to state championships
After the Boothbay Region High School Seahawks final meet of the season against the Erskine Academy Eagles on January 31, five swimmers have qualified to take place in the state championships.
Class B (Boothbay’s division) State championships will be held at Bowdoin, with the girls competing on February 17 and the boys on February 18 in the evening. However, before swimmers can even compete in the finals, they need to make it past the qualifying round held in the morning.
According to coach Linda Strout, between 25 and 30 different schools will have swimmers represented there.
“Only the top 16 swimmers (that’s individual kids, not teams) can move on to the championships,” Strout said. “It’s fierce competition and I don’t expect every swimmer to qualify.
“Just making it, and doing as well as all these kids have done, that’s something to be proud of.”
Besides the individual events, the Seahawks will be competing in several relays. To boost the team up to relay size, and for morale support, team members Chelsea Graves, Samantha Carter, Vincente Haro and Chris Groneng will be attending the meets as well.
