Seahawks score well in season opener
In their first meet of the season, shorthanded and against some stiff competition, the BRHS track teams did exceedingly well.
“I was really impressed with both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The meet was a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference competition and featured schools that were, for the most part, much larger. In addition, we had a couple of school trips and several of our students were traveling abroad. All told, it ended up being a very good night,” Coach Nick Scott said.
Senior Shane Johnson led all BRHS scorers with 18 points, racking up wins in the discus and shot put events and a second place finish in the 300m hurdles. Hannah Morley was the second highest BRHS scorer, with 15 points. Morley placed first in the 800m run and fourth in the 1600m. The team’s other double digit scorers were: Angie Perkins, who finished first in 300m hurdles and fourth in high jump, scored 14 points; Meghan Oakes, with a first place in the 100m hurdles and a third place in the 3200m run, scored 11 points; and Olivia Paolillo, who scored fourth in 100m hurdles and third in 300m hurdles, scored 11 points. All these top scorers also competed on relay teams.
Other girls’ team meet highlights included Colette Bertin’s second place finish in the 100m hurdles, Jaime Wheeler’s first place and Emma Hodgdon’s second place finish in the 1600m racewalk, Lisa Pawlowski’s first place finish in high jump, and Annielyn Mackusick’s third place finish in shot put and fourth place finish in discus. For the boys team, Blake Erhard finished second in the 1600m run, Morgen Wilson placed second in the 1600m racewalk, Bryan Otero finished fourth in the 300m hurdles, Connor Demmons placed second in discus and third in shot put, Jay Hasch placed third in triple jump and Stevie Reny placed sixth in the high jump, with a state-qualifying jump.
Track and field athletes work all season to qualify for the conference and state championship meets. In their first event of the season, several BRHS athletes have already made the cut.
“Sixteen athletes qualified for the Mountain Valley Conference championships and a handful of others already qualified for states. Notably, Hannah Morley qualified in the 1600m and the 800m, while Angie Perkins (300m hurdles) and Lisa Pawlowski (high jump) and Shane Johnson (discus) all qualified for the state meet in an event. Perhaps most impressive of all, Stevie Reny, a freshman competing in his very first high school meet ever, qualified for states in the high jump,” Scott said.
