Seahawks swim in state finals
February 17-18, class-B swimmers from all over the state lined up to swim in the state finals.
Due to the snowstorm on the way, the format of the boys meet was changed. Instead of swimming trials in the morning and just the top 16 competing, all swimmers got to swim the finals as a regular timed meet. The girls meet took place in the regular format.
The boys competed in the 200 yard medley relay, 200 yard freestyle relay, 100 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke. Seahawks competing were senior Austin Crocker, junior Karl Alamo, junior Chris Groning (relays only), and sophomore Brad Tibbetts.
The boys finished in 18th place out of 26 schools, while the Lincoln Academy Eagle boys finished in 20th place.
“With only 4 boys competing, 18th place is very good for them,” Coach Linda Strout said.
The boys had their best times of the season in both relays: 1:48.43 in the 200 yard freestyle; and 2:07.99 in the 200 yard medley. Tibbetts achieved the best times for the season in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.07, a 14th place finish out of 33. Karl Alamo took two seconds off his time for the 100 yard butterfly (1:10.73), achieving a personal best.
The Seahawk girls were unable to compete on February 17 due to a conflicting school trip and athletic policy violations. Heidi Zeigra, who lives in Boothbay but attends Lincoln Academy as a senior, had an outstanding final showing for the Eagles. She took 5th place in the championship 200 yard IM with a time of 2:23:68 and 6th in the girls 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.46. These scores greatly aided the Lincoln Academy girls team in finishing 12th out of 27 schools.
