Seahawks take first in three events
Waterville and Winslow high schools faced off against the Boothbay Region High School Seahawks and Lincoln Academy Eagles at the second home meet of the season, held Friday, Jan. 6.
The Seahawks made an impressive showing, with Emma Pearce taking two first places in the 50-yard and 500-yard freestyles while team Captain Evy Case took first in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of one minute 23.71 seconds, qualifying her for states in that event. Pearce's time in the 500-yard freestyle of six minutes and 40.53 seconds is only half a second from a state-qualifying time.
Seconds were taken by Evy Case in the 100-yard butterfly with a state-qualifying time of one minute and 13.95 seconds, Hannah Witwicki in the 100-yard freestyle, and the girls team in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Thirds went to Hannah Witwicki in the 200-yard IM and Rowan Kristan in the 50-yard freestyle (with a qualifying time of 26.60 seconds). Kristan also took third in the 100-yard freestyle, only .2 seconds off a state-qualifying time.
The girls took fourth in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays, and Ashley Ames got fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.
Molly Thibault took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and Ames took sixth in the 50-yard freestyle.
Pearce would likely have qualified for the 500-yard freestyle, but a loss of light partway through the event caused the swimmers to stop mid-pool in confusion. With a cheering crowd urging them on, the swimmers completed the event by the red light of the scoreboard. The meet was then put on hold for about 10 minutes while light was restored.
