Seahawks on track for success
Not since early the 2000s have the Boothbay Region High School Seahawks girls track team collectively outscored all the other teams in the running at a meet. This was the case in Wiscasset April 23 when the Lady Seahawks held an impressive edge over their opponents from Hall-Dale, Spruce Mountain, Monmouth and Wiscasset.
With several solid performances, the Boothbay girls scored 154 points, besting their closest opponent, Monmouth Academy, by 15 points.
Surprisingly, Boothbay's only first place finishes came from the field events with Jessie Vander (discus, shot put), Nell Anthony (javelin) and Morgan Crocker, (long jump, triple jump) taking the top spots. The rest of the points were scored by Boothbay due to higher participation level spread throughout all events.
The boys track team narrowly missed a second place team finish in Wiscasset. Jason Maddocks (100 meter dash) was the only first place finisher. Boothbay was bolstered by solid performances in the 800 and 3,200 meter runs, while racking up points in the shot put with state qualifying throws from Linc Simmons and an impressive effort start for newcomer Antonio Maulolo.
Boothbay track and field is gaining momentum with 19 new qualifying times being set by Seahawks athletes for the Mountain Valley Conference Championships on May 23. While Morgan Crocker (triple jump, 300 hurdles), Hannah Morley (3,200 meter), Kade Smith (1,600 meter racewalk), Sophia Thayer (1,600 meter run) and Jessie Vander (shot put, discus) have automatically qualified for the state championship meet, 10 Boothbay athletes have also qualified provisionally for the state championships in 13 additional events; that means they can potentially make it to state championships, based on their early season performances this early on in the season.
On April 30, Boothbay traveled to Hall-Dale High School in Farmingdale for the next meet. Results will be posted to www.boothbayregister.com as soon as they are available.
