Seahawks-Wolverines indoor track off to strong start
The Seahawks-Wolverines indoor track teams had their first meet Dec. 30 in Gorham at the University of Southern Maine campus. Boys and girls faced teams from Biddeford, Bonny Eagle, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Cheverus, Cony, Edward Little, Exeter, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Keene, Kennett, Lake Region, Mascoma Valley, Massabesic, Morse, Plymouth, Portland, Portsmouth, Sanford, Scarborough, South Portland, Wells, Westbrook, Winnacunnet and York high schools and Pembroke and Thornton academies.
While athletic teams from Boothbay Region High School and Wiscasset Middle High School are usually in the Maine Principals Association Class C Conference, sparse indoor track participation among Mountain Valley Conference teams elevated the Seahawks-Wolverines to Class B.
“Great job,” Seahawks Coach Nick Scott said in an email blast following the meet. “What a fun day to start off the competitive season. While there were all kinds of fine performances today, junior Kayden Ames led the way for Boothbay/Wiscasset. In his first indoor track meet ever, Kayden threw the shot put 43’5.5”. The throw automatically qualifies Kayden for the Class B State Championships. It is also the third best throw in program history.”
The USM invitational marked several firsts for the combined teams, namely the Wolverines’ first ever indoor season. Along with Ames, the boys 4x200m relay team of Wolverines Payton Blagdon, Henry Putnam, Austin Trask and Bryan Gagnon will also go to states. Several Wolverines also earned spots on the Seahawks’ class records list: junior Nate Benoit claimed top performance for his class in the 55m hurdles; Blagdon, junior, for the 55m dash; Putnam, freshman, for the 400m dash; and Trask, sophomore, for the 55m and 200m dashes.
Overall results: Trask, Blagdon, Benoit and Caden Royal placed 28th, 46th, 58th and 66th in the 55m dash in 7.47, 7.94, 8.38 and 9.4. Trask and Gagnon placed 25th and 31st in the 200m dash in 26.58 and 27.06. Blagdon and Putnam placed 14th and 23rd in the 400m run in 58.12 and 1:01.89. Benoit placed 21st in the 55m hurdles in 11.77. Ames and Royal took fifth and 27th in shot put with throws of 43’5.5” and 27’. Zoe Curtis and Danielle Warren placed 41st and 42nd in the 55m dash in 9.76 and 9.82. Warren also placed 23rd in the long jump with a 7’10.5” jump.
Marissa Davison and Curtis placed 28th and 29th in the shot put with throws of 19’3” and 15’9.5”.
The Seahawks-Wolverines will return to USM to host an MVC meet Jan. 6. Any parents and siblings willing to volunteer at the event should contact the coaches.
