The Popham Beach Library will present a program on the long history and current state of Seguin Island on Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at the library as part of its “Summer Series 2024.” Speakers for the program will be Chris Hall historian for the Friends of Seguin Island Light Station (FOSILS) and a member of the On Island Committee, and Tip Koehler, Chair of the FOSILS Capital Campaign. The two will share
their enthusiasm for their work for Seguin and the importance, role and history of the beautiful island that sits just off Popham’s shore.

The island light was commissioned by George Washington in 1795, making it the second oldest lighthouse in Maine. Hall and Koehler will share stories of early life and original structures on the 64-acre island and the many challenges from the past. They will give an overview of the current structures on Seguin and a description of the Fresnel lens in the light.

Chris Hall retired after 16 years as Registrar and Curator of Exhibits at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. He learned traditional wooden boatbuilding as a young man at the Apprenticeshop in Bath. He feels that keeping Seguin Light Station going is a perfect blend of history and hands-on work.

Tip Koehler is a retired naval architect with 41 years in naval combatant design, manufacturing, and testing on Bath built ships. He is an avid sailor and has sailed past Seguin many times both on Bath Built ships and on Gryphon, his Maine made Sabre sloop.
