Sewing for our weakest members

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.” If that’s true then the Community Center’s “Just Sew” group continues to show its greatness.

Meeting on Fridays between 9 a.m. and noon, Bobbie Reed, Grace Morgan, Angel Ames and Confetti Winslow spend their time on projects that will comfort some of the youngest and weakest members of our world.

Their previous efforts have produced mats for the animal shelter’s puppies and kittens, warm fleece accessories for area residents and items the center sells to support its wide range of activities.

The current example of the group’s work is a bundle of small quilts which will be donated to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center for use by premature infants.

“I’m always amazed at what comes out of the back room and it’s always a gift of love for others,” center director Jane Good said.

Ames suggested the newest idea based on firsthand knowledge of the need. At one time, one of her children was in a neo-natal ward and Ames had seen the quilts used at a hospital in another area. She realized the group could make the small quilts that would make a big difference to a family with a child in the hospital.

This summer, the group plans a special program to teach area junior high students how to sew on a button, follow a basic pattern and how to quilt. As the students complete a project, they will be given a machine to use at home and a starter bag with scissors and thread. To help with this effort, the Just Sew team is looking for donations of working sewing machines as well as scissors, thread and cotton fabric.

The telephone number for the center is 633-9876.
