A soggy start to the Shipyard Cup
Seasoned skippers rose early on today, Aug. 9, to the sprinkling rain that kicked off the first of three days of sailboat races for the Shipyard Cup off Boothbay Harbor.
Despite the soggy conditions, crew members aboard the Scheherazade were busy swabbing the decks in anticipation of the big race. Built at Hodgdon Yachts in 2003, the 156-foot super yacht is the defending champion of the race, which attracts sailing enthusiasts and spectators from all over the world.
But for this year's 11th annual cup there is a new contender that sits silently in the harbor. With its sleek black hull and a main mast towering over 200-feet, the Marie is ready to catch wind and slice through the seas. The vessel's owner is Dr. Ed Bosarge of Southport Island, who has been spotted practicing around the peninsula in the previous two days leading up to the race.
Friday might look wet, but the weekend weather forecasts predict sunny skies, temperatures in the mid 70s and winds blowing from the west at 13 miles per hour.
The guns will sound at 12:30 p.m., from August 9-11. Be sure to check back for photo updates and race results.
