The week began with nine children taking the plunge into the icy cold water of Cozy Harbor, while instructors and students clapped and cheered their names. We would like to welcome these nine children: Evie Moser, Charlotte Moser, Ansophie Pagani, Cecilia Spence, Greyson Mazza, Sage Derezin, Mia Derezin, Skye Harrington and Eloise Khoury.
The morning class had a great week despite some strange weather and wind. All three sections of the beginner class followed a main goal this week that was working on the close-hauled point of sail. All of the instructors made a point to help each sailor either learn, improve, or master this critical aspect of sailing. On Friday, Fun Day, the morning class got the chance to sail in the 420 racing boats and the J24, Wabi Sabi. All the sailors were thrilled to mix it up with these more advanced boats and experience hiking out, sailing with a jib, moving fast!
The turnabouts spent the week working on racing rules, showing their knowledge in a race day later in the week. Congratulations to Robert Shaw and Graham Harris for earning first place.
The Optis had an exciting week of racing. On Wednesday and Thursday they participated in a two-day race off, competing for the eight spots that advanced to the “Battle of the Bays” competition with the Boothbay Harbor Optis. The top three boats of the race-offs were Bryce Jacobs, Charlie Apolinsky, and Mason Erhard. The Southport Optis went on to have a terrific afternoon of sailing in the Battle of the Bays competition.
The 420s also had a successful week racing and preparing for the Battle of the Bays. The class had a race day on Wednesday in which Max Freund and Symmi Auber earned first place and Ryan McCann and Tessa Houston earned second. Four boats attended the Battle of the Bays on Friday and were faced with harsh, windy conditions. Congratulations to all the competitors and thank you to the Boothbay Harbor Sailing Program for hosting the event.
The Ice Cream Social was on Thursday and it was very successful. There was high attendance and lots of smiling faces. The next event will be a Bingo on Thursday, Aug. 4. It will be a baked goods Bingo so expect some delicious prizes. All are welcome!
