Southport Junior Yacht Club
This past week in Southport has brought nothing but sunny days without a cloud in the sky. As we hoped for last week, the fog and rain finally let up and allowed us to actually feel like it’s summer. The wind around Cozy Harbor was just perfect; not too much, but not too little. Now officially past the halfway point of our eight weeks at SYC, you really can see how the summer flies by.
In the morning class on Monday, there were three swim tests! The swimmers were Alex Hurd, Kinley Warren and Miranda McMillen. After their brief, but chilly swim off the junior dock, they were rewarded with hot chocolate and a towel from their buddy as per tradition.
Friday held the afternoon class’s special event: the junior dance! The theme was Under the Sea and many sailors of 13 and older came to have some fun. Even some sailors from the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club made appearances as well! Thank you to Jen Baker for organizing the dance and to the afternoon class sailors who stayed late on Friday to help setup and decorate!
Early the next morning, on Saturday at 8, the annual Rock the Boat 5k took place! Many people came to run and walk the loop through Southport. There really is no better way to start your day.
In the afternoon class, racing 420s concluded their race offs to determine who will go to Maine States and began their races for the August Series title at SYC. After being canceled twice due to bad weather, the Around Southport 420 race was held Monday, July 31.
This week at Southport Yacht Club, we are hosting Maine State Optis Aug. 2-3 due to an Opti sailor from SYC getting 1st place at Maine States last summer!
Coming up on Thursday, Aug. 10, SYC will have our Baked Goods Bingo! The event will begin at 7 p.m. and everyone is welcome! There will be a sign hanging in the junior building to sign up to bring a baked good. The more the merrier!
