Southport Junior Yacht Club
The summer is more than halfway finished; however, the sailing program is still in full swing. On Monday, the swimmers were greeted by a beautiful day for their swim tests. We are pleased to welcome Lucy Berman, Tommy Beer and Jillian Cole.
Despite the ominous weather in the afternoons, the morning class was able to sail every day this week. Sailors enjoyed going around David’s Island and looking for sea life along the bottom of the “secret passage.”
On Friday, the morning class was entertained by a beautiful day at Powderhorn, taking part in the much loved Pirate Day. Sailors dressed up as their favorite pirate and spent the morning searching for buried treasure along the beach. With the help of Ella Freund, our guest student, Owen, among others, helped to find the hidden treasure. The sweet bounty was shared with their fellow sailors.
The afternoon class also had an activity filled week. The Opti class was happy to welcome sailors from Christmas Cove Yacht Club and Camden Yacht Club for friendly racing on Wednesday and Thursday. The weather was not ideal, however, they were able to get in a few races. On Friday, some of the Opti class went to the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club for a beautiful afternoon of fun racing. We would like to thank BHYC for hosting our sailors.
Additionally, the 420 class had an exciting week of sailing. On Wednesday, a few sailors had the chance to sail on Joyride, the Chatterton’s beautiful trimaran. We are very appreciative to the family for this fantastic opportunity. On Thursday, many 420 sailors ventured to BHYC by motorboat to race with their sailors. However, the weather did not cooperate, and soon after arriving, our sailors had to come home. We would like to thank BHYC again for hosting, and letting us use their lovely new boats. The 420 class finished off the week with a race day on Friday. The light, shifty wind provided difficult conditions, but it was a successful day nonetheless.
We are looking forward to another great week of sailing and hope to see everyone at the Ice Cream Social on Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m.
In addition, the Southport Junior Yacht Club Awards Banquet is approaching fast. The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22. Save the date! Tickets will first go on sale, this Wednesday, August 13, at the pick up and drop off times of both the morning and afternoon classes. As well as these times, tickets will also be sold during Thursday’s Ice Cream Social. Tessa Houston, the junior Treasurer, will be selling the tickets.
Seating is limited, so buy your tickets early! It is $8.00 per person and includes meat or cheese lasagna, garlic bread, and dessert. Families are asked to bring a green salad to serve their group. This event is open to all SJYCSF sailors and their families and friends. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
