Southport Scouts complete the Freedom Trail
Southport Island's Boy Scout Troop 238 boarded the Amtrak Downeaster on Saturday, June 7 and traveled to Boston to earn their Citizen in the Nation Merit Badge and walk the Freedom Trail with Mehitable Dawes (a.k.a. Emily Kovatch, a Freedom Trail Player who was dressed in 18th century colonial costume). Highlights of the four-hour tour included visiting the Old Granary Burying Grounds, the site of the Boston Massacre, Faneuil Hall (where the troop stepped back into the future for a moment and was entertained by street performers drumming on five gallon, plastic buckets and break dancing).
The troop then continued on and visited the Old North Church, Copp's Hill, and the USS Constitution. Throughout the tour the Scouts worked on a Freedom Trail Hike credential questionnaire, which is sponsored by the Boston Minuteman Council and asks specific questions about the Freedom Trail. The entire troop earned a Freedom Trail medal and patch for their completion of the historical program.
The Scouts paid for their train tickets by holding a yard sale last summer and would like to recognize and thank Ed and Arlene Jewett whose generosity allowed the troop to hire a tour guide and paid for the Scouts' lunch (pizza at North Station). A great time was had by all!
