Special Olympians bring home 19 medals
Boothbay Region Special Olympians competed in the Maine Special Olympics Alpine State Games March 11 at Lost Valley in Auburn. 13 athletes competed in levels one through four of the slalom and super-g categories scoring 19 medals overall, five fourth-place ribbons and one fifth place.
Jameson Brooks took level one’s bronze medal for slalom, silver for downhill and gold for the 10m walk. Blake Chadwick swept division two with golds in the slalom and super-g events. Level three athlete Donny Dunning took silver and fourth for slalom and super-g respectively; Danny Miller, gold and silver; Anthony Angelico, bronzes; Amber Hyson, fifth and silver; Vincent Giles, silver and fourth; and John “Piper” Rankin, silvers. Level four athlete Grace Giles took gold and fourth for slalom and super-g, respectively; Joey Ranco, silver and fourth; Ronda LeConte, bronze and silver; and Valerie Giles, bronze and fourth.
There were tons of excitement, old friends and new relationships built, but the frosting on the cake were the many successes the team brought home, said Coach Toby LeConte. Coaches Don Dickson, Earl Brewer, Zac Miller and Cormac Miller, longtime volunteers Roberta Blaney and Mary Pawlowski and new helpers Nicole Blake, Camile and Daryl Chadwick were all proud of their athletes and happy for the long awaited return to the slopes, LeConte said.
“I was pleased with the athletes’ abilities as last year lent itself to few practices,” said LeConte. “This year getting back to their excellent abilities was a large challenge for the athletes, but they came to the front and were so pleased with the results.”
