Special Olympians compete in swimming
The Sagadahoc-Lincoln Area Special Olympics swim meet was held at the Bath YMCA on Wednesday, April 13. Teams were from Brunswick Schools and Adults, Bath schools and Bath YMCA team, Freeport Area, and Great Salt Bay. Missing were teams Basso Bears, Wiscasset, and Damariscotta Adults. We were back to “normal" with no restrictions.
Boothbay Region Special Olympians were represented and did very well in many events and age groups.
The 50 meter fly was dominated by Valerie Giles winning a blue ribbon.She was so pumped up and surprised us all.
Anthony Angelico won 2 blue ribbons for his 25 free and 25 backstroke.
Blake Chadwick won a a second place and a third place for his 25 backstroke and 25 Free.
Vincent Giles who has shown the most improvement this season won a blue first in the back and a second in the free.
Grace Giles, Valerie Giles and Ronda LeConte won in their divisions all blue ribbons for their 50 backstrokes as well. Ronda and Valerie won blue firsts in their 50 free events as well.
Donny Dunning won a second for his freestyle and and a third for his backstroke.
Danny Miller was down to the wire with one other athlete in both races 25 and 50 free winning a second for both races.
Joey Ranco swam all of his races against a very strong swimmer for many years, Brandon Wear, who swims with Bath adults taking a second for the 50 free and back but with strong will and plenty of practice took a blue first place for the 25 back.
The relay team of Joey Ranco, Ronda LeConte, Grace Giles and Valerie Giles won the blue ribbon again.
The relay team of Anthony Angelico, Blake Chadwick, Vincent Giles and Danny Miller won third place. They were so excited for their hard work.
All athletes will be traveling to the new Olympic ready pool at Colby College for two days on April 27 and 28 for the State Special Olympics Swimming Events. With one more practice they are ready and excited. Valerie made the comment that she can’t wait to see all her swimming friends.
