Special Olympic basketball teams compete in Gorham
On Saturday, April 4 the Boothbay Region Special Olympics Basketball skills athletes and basketball team traveled to the University of Southern Maine at Gorham to compete in basketball.
The students played their first game against Sacopee Valley and won 26-2.
Scorers were Deshawn Averill and Logan Posey with two points each, Adam Jackimovicz with eight points and high scorer Thomas Wilcox with 14 points.
In the final game of the tournament, Boothbay once again defeated Sacopee Valley, 24-7. Amber Hyson, Deshawn Averill and Adam Jackimovicz all scored two points and Thomas Wilcox once again helped us win the gold with another 14 points.
Other members of the student team were Chloe Desjardins, Vincent Giles, Matthew Hyson, Valerie Giles and Grace Giles. The student team had great games, great fun, and were great sports. Skills members were John Rankin receiving a bronze, Anthony Angelico receiving a bronze and Blake Chadwick receiving a gold.
The adults played the Mert Enterprises team and lost their first game, 18-8. The top scorer was Brenda LeConte scoring all eight points. Mert Enterprise team has two very tall players and Boothbay played very well defensively, but not enough.
In their final game against MVRA, Boothbay lost, 12-8. They again have 21 fast breaks but were only able to score three of those. Ronda LeConte scored six points, and Brenda LeConte scored two points. Members of the adult team included Joey Ranco, Donny Dunning, Danny Miller and Matt Farnham. Although the adults lost, they knew they played well and they still came home as fighters and champions.
