Sprucewold Column: Meetings and more
The Sprucewold Directories are here! Stop by our cabin on Bayberry to pick one up. On Saturday we will distribute them at the Sprucewold Beach Club annual meeting and at the annual Sprucewold Potluck (New date!) on Sunday, Aug. 11 on Linekin Green. One per cabin, please.
The annual meeting of the Sprucewold Beach Club will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. at the hall of Our Lady Queen of Peace. Please make every effort to attend, but if you can't, a proxy may be sent to another member who will vote on your behalf.
Also noted above, the annual potluck supper was postponed from last Saturday to Sunday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. because of predicted thunder showers that did not come, but did arrive the next morning. Many years ago at an August event on Linekin Green, a guest was struck by ground lightning and spent three days recovering in the hospital, so we took no chances. Bring a main dish, salad, or dessert; beverages will be provided. If possible, bring your own dishes and cutlery to cut down on waste. Come one and all!
The Linekin Heights Association met under the pavilion on the Green early on Saturday morning between rain storms. Highlights were pump station repairs and the attendance of wardens from the Maine Warden Service: Sergeant Justin Fowlie, Warden Doug Kulis and Warden Dory Kulis, who explained the laws of posting no hunting and no trespassing signs and what steps owners can take to prevent hunting on their property. This action was taken in response to crossbow bolts found on properties on Bayberry and Crooked Pine Roads. Expanded Archery season is Sept. 7-Dec. 14, 2024, and Regular Archery season begins on Oct. 5, 2024. Many Sprucewold residents are still in their cabins until the middle of October.
The Sprucewold Association annual meeting was held on Zoom because of the rain. We had an excellent turnout, President Annaliese Neff called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. and a moment of silence was held for the passing of longtime resident Frank DeToma of Racoon Drive. Announcements of births followed: Chris and Lisa Addis have a grandson, Gabe; Charles and Elaine Rittershaus have a granddaughter, Georgiana Alice Rittershaus Haggett; and Pat and Tom Thompson welcomed grandson, Beck. New neighbors are: Carrie Vooght and Dana Loud on Crooked Pine and Gary and Linda Gagne on Crest, make certain they receive a grand Sprucewold welcome!
Firewise Chipping Day was on Monday, July 29, postponed from the 23rd to due machinery malfunction.Thank you to co chairs Curt Audin and Randy Lehman for leading the Firewise committee work and to Tom Thompson and Doug Winter for volunteering on Chipping Day. A reminder, please let Randy or Curt know if you have tree work done or take loads of branches and brush to the dump as this also counts towards our chipping totals and our Firewise requirements.
Annual donations have been made to the Boothbay Register, Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Boothbay Harbor Fire Department, Boothbay Region Food Pantry, and the Boothbay Region YMCA. Sprucewold Association dues and fees remain the same, the digital directory has been updated and sent out. Please remember to check your email and vote for the new budget and slate of officers this week. We have new officers: Jeanne Koenig, first vice president; Danielle Bazinet, second vice president; Leigh Pumillia, and Elaine Rittershaus on the Social Committee; Danielle Bazinet, Keeper of the Directory; and our new treasurer who will begin in October. We have almost filled all officer positions, our social committee still needs more members. Thank you one and all for volunteering. Jason Denby will be leaving his position of treasurer and Keeper of the Directory in October, it is difficult to say goodby to someone who has been the epitome of a good friend, neighbor, volunteer, and jack-of-all-trades. Jason will be missed, and we all wish him the best in his future endeavors. May they bring him the same light and joy that he has brought to Sprucewold.
