Steinmetz earns Lobster Bowl roster spot
A soft-spoken lineman is this year’s Boothbay Region High School’s representative in the Maine Shriners Lobster Bowl. Senior Doug Steinmetz, a three-year starter, was named to the 45-member West All-Star squad to play in the 27th Annual Lobster Bowl.
Steinmetz is one of 90 graduating high school seniors with an opportunity to play one final game. Since 1989, the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic has raised money for 22 Shrine Hospitals for Children across North America. The East versus West matchup brings over 150 Maine student athletes and coaches together for what is one of the premier Maine athletic events each year.
Steinmetz won Boothbay Region’s “Golden Hammer Award” this season as the Seahawks’ most valuable player. Steinmetz was pleased by his All-Star selection.
“I'm really excited about it,” Steinmetz, 18, of Boothbay, said. “It gives you one last opportunity to play football against the best players in the state. It’s quite an honor.”
Steinmetz was one of five players nominated by Boothbay Region coach Bryan Dionne. Each school has at least one representative. The West All-Stars coaching staff made 45 regional selections.
Oak Hill’s Stacen Doucette is this year’s West All-Star coach. Doucette has led the Raiders to three consecutive Class C state championships. Doucette’s staff selected Steinmentz for his reputation as a physical football player who plays with great intensity.
According to Dionne, Steinmetz is known for his hard work “in the trenches.” The West staff also thought Steinmetz was “a good fit” for what they expect from a lineman.
“He has a desire to dominate the man across from him,” Dionne said. “He is also a quiet leader who is respected by his peers. He was tremendous this fall helping younger linemen learn their assignments and teaching better technique.”
Steinmetz will join the other 89 All-Stars this summer for a week of training camp in Dover-Foxcroft. The squads will participate in three-a-day workouts. They will also have a beach day. The players also attend a banquet which spotlights the Maine Shriners Childrens Hospital’s work.
Steinmetz anchored both the offensive and defensive lines for Boothbay Region this season. He was a captain for the squad which earned a Class C South quarterfinal berth.
Steinmetz will not play college football. He will attend Washington County Community College in Calais this fall. He is pursuing a career as an automotive mechanic.
Each July, the Lobster Bowl is played at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford.
