Summer moving too fast
A glitch of some sort sent the BHYC column into cyberspace last week.
It may be just as well because we have since received a report from PC John Chapman describing the Lobster Run Ocean Sailboat Race from Stonington, Conn., to Boothbay Harbor far better than this reporter might have done. Please look for John’s report elsewhere in the Register.
PC John and Peggy Chapman and PC Andy and PC Louise Holmes took leadership roles in making the complicated look easy. Many BHYC and Corinthian volunteers spent sleep deprived hours keeping track of the competitors, manning the finish line, keeping us all informed and answering questions. A well done to all involved – we all have to wait until 2014 to enjoy the excitement of the next race. Not to worry there will be much excitement for us all in the coming weeks.
This Sunday evening Dr. Scott D. Krauss will be the after “Suppah” speaker. Dr. Krauss is on the staff of the New England Aquarium and is an expert on Right Whales. It will be an interesting evening – reservations help.
The Annual Dance is set for Aug. 18, a new approach devised by Cynthia Edwards. It will be a casual evening and brushing up on your “Jitterbug Techniques” might be worthwhile. Music will be furnished by DJ Chuck Brady. Cynthia says that the hors d’oeuvres will be sumptuous.
The annual three club golf tournament was a great success reports Bob Chase. Players from Downeast YC, Southport YC, and BHYC met after the tournament at our club for refreshments, dinner and awards.
The recipients were Pat Ridlin and Richard Gerstein for closest to the pin and John McIntosh for the straightest drive. Lo-net went to the foursome of Don and Janie Griffon and Bill and Bambi Holly who also had the lo-gross on a net basis. They beat out the foursome of Ann Wise, Ken Colbert, Maggie Newton and Bob Chase. The winning prizes were dinner at the Rocktide Inn and the Boothbay Golf Club.
This is the third year these two firms have donated prizes – Thank you again for your support.
At the last couple of Thursday Night Cocktail Parties the spectacular hors d’oeuvres were presented by, Ellen Herman, Susan Haney, Sandi Hakanson, Bob Vawter, Malinda Welter, Carole LaFountaine, Jim and Mary Lou Newstead, Cotty Peabody, Betty Barker and Leigh Anne Farnell and a week later by Cynthia Edwards, Brenda Blake, Penny McLaughlin, Meagan Cadorette, Jane Gardner, Sandy and John Gillespie, Judy Nightingale, Priscilla Tavenner, and Ellen and Charles Biriem.
Lynne Norhoff leads a weekly book discussion group and they are currently concentrating on the World War II years. I also learned that just a few short years ago, Lynne was a cheerleader. Check with George Whitten, John Druce and Dr. Ed Gibson Lynne, for their experiences during WWII. They were really in the thick of it.
Our summer season is moving along much too fast: the Junior Program ends soon and our annual meeting is just around the corner. It’s not over till it’s over: be sure to enjoy the remaining days of this exciting summer season to their fullest.
