Just when we'd had a full week of fog and heat and rain and humidity, we got Saturday! What a gorgeous day.

Low humidity, cooler temperatures, nice breezes for the boating crowd — a welcomed change. The harbor was busy on the water and in the streets. People everywhere seemed to be pleased.

School schedules are driving the bus these days, good weather or not. I photographed a family from Atlanta in July. They started school Aug. 5!

Yikes! August in Atlanta! Could there be a hotter time? When I asked why, it was explained that they were on a 12-month school year with longer breaks at different times of the year. A longer break in August would work. Turn up the A/C or get me to Maine!

When I taught in the New Jersey public schools, September and June were hot and muggy. There was no air conditioning so we opened windows. Wrong!

Thirty students per class, 5-6 classes per day and temps in the 80s. You do the math. Field trip! Outdoor science projects. Ice cream seminar! Shore excursions. Anything to escape. It was impossible to ask a room full of hormones to sit still and listen to anything for an hour. Nobody wanted to be locked in a classroom, me included. No matter how creative I tried to be, everybody ran for the exits. Once all that brick and mortar heated up, we were toast.

Saturday's weather here was perfect, and now our schools are in session. Fall is in the air.

School or no school, vacationing or not, we can only wait and see what shows up from the skies. Rain is needed, but only at night and never on weekends.
