Telstar tops Boothbay Region baseball 7-3
Boothbay Region pitcher Zach Vise pitched a complete game striking out three walking one and allowing eight hits, but it wasn’t enough. Telstar High School of Bethel topped Boothbay Region, 7-3, May 13 in a Mountain Valley Conference game at Sherman Field.
Boothbay Region dropped to 0-9. The Seahawks have been competitive in all but two games this year. In each loss, the common denominator has been the team’s inability to hit. Boothbay Region’s three runs came on six hits.
“We don’t hit, that is the bottom line,” said assistant coach Smith Climo. “I doubt we’ve had an inning all year where (we) strung four hits in a row.”
Boothbay scored three runs on six hits. Julian Aponte had a bunt single. Vise had a single and run batted in. Noah Sherburne singled. The two Boothbay batting stars were Carter Babcock with two singles and two RBI. And No. 9 hitter Grant “McChick” Giles recorded his first hit of the year.
“He earned his McChicken tonight,” said Boothbay Region coach Josh Garneau. “He eats a lot of McChickens after road games. That’s how he earned his nickname. So I told him for every hit he got we’d buy him a McChicken.”
Telstar scored twice in the first inning, but Boothbay responded with one in the bottom of the inning. Aponte reached on a dropped third strike and stole second. He scored on Vise’s single.
Boothbay scored twice more in the third to tie the game at 3-3. Telstar scored two in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh. Boothbay Region’s pitching has been good enough to keep most of the games close. The Seahawks lack of hitting has made earning their first win in two seasons a major challenge.
“Zach pitched well for us. He throws strikes and our fielding was pretty good too. We just didn’t hit. I don’t think we got a hit after the third inning.”
Telstar (3-6) in 14th place in the Western Maine Class C baseball standings. Boothbay Region is 17th.
Boothbay Region will host Monmouth Academy (7-2) Friday. The Mustangs are in second place in Western Maine Class C Heal Point standings.
