Theater Project presents ‘Matt & Ben,’ the story behind 'Good Will Hunting'
A small group of Theater Project alumni are taking the stage this summer for a production of Matt & Ben, a satirical look at the early lives of the authors and stars of the 1997 film “Good Will Hunting.”
Written by Mindy Kaling (“The Office,” and “The Mindy Project”) and Brenda Withers, “Matt & Ben” is the story of Hollywood best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, before J-Lo, before Gwyneth, before Oscar. When the screenplay for “Good Will Hunting” falls from the ceiling of Ben Affleck’s apartment, the boys and their friendship are tested in a way that The New York Times called “absolutely delightful, and deliciously spiteful!”
Starring Meghan McGuire as Matt Damon and Samantha Menair as Ben Affleck and directed by Sean McGuire, the producing group are all alumni of The Theater Project's Young Company. McGuire, a graduate of St. Lawrence University, has been teaching, directing, and acting at The Theater Project since his return to Brunswick.
Meghan McGuire and Sam Menair have just completed their first years at Denison University and Ithaca College, respectively. They are excited to be back with The Theater Project, and the chance to produce their own show.
“Sam and I decided to do this play in the fall of our first year at college,” Meghan McGuire said. “I think we were both really missing The Theater Project and doing ridiculous things together. I had heard of the play from Mindy Kaling's book, so I decided to read it. After the first scene, I just knew that it would be perfect for Sam and me.
“It was a story about best friends, and it was really funny. Plus, it was a comedy written especially for two women which was really refreshing and exciting. We both really wanted to be doing comedy, and this two person play gave us the perfect opportunity to do it together.”
“Matt & Ben” is on stage at The Theater Project on July 10, 11 and 13, at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets by donation and only sold at the door (no advance reservations).
There will be a special Alumni Only performance on Saturday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m.. Any and all Theater Project alums and their family are invited back to the theater for a free performance of this production.
