Twenty-eight boats compete in 40th regatta
For 40 consecutive years, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club has run one of the major sailing regattas on the coast of Maine, and this edition was completed on Sunday afternoon under excellent wind and sea conditions. Twenty-eight boats gathered at the start line on Saturday in six racing classes with the race under the direction of Geoff McCuskey.
The Cruising A division was won by Timothy Allen and crew sailing Greyhawk. Close behind him in second was Panache owned and sailed by BHYC member Bob Scribner. Third was captured by Arthur Kit Watson of Camden sailing Too Elusive.
In Cruising B, Imagine skippered by Randy Rice finished in the top spot followed by local Michael Gaffney sailing Sunfish then Chris Malliet in Step Lively.
The Boothbay Harbor One Design class was won for the second year in a row by two young teenage skippers from the host BHYC, Jacqueline and Emma Van der Veen, with crew Marcus and Ryan Russell, sailing Marion’s Weigh. They were closely followed by Eric Hakanson, Rear Commodore of BHYC, in Charisma.
In racing Division 1, Wilde Agnes sailed by Stuart MacNeil took top honors ahead of last year's winner Ken Colburn of Green Island, Southport sailing Ghost and Reginald Smithwick of Portland in Kaos.
In the Racing 2 Division, Local skipper Bill Hunt of BHYC crossed the line first sailing Firebolt followed by Carol Lloyd of McKown Point and her family crew in Dotsy and Steve Tillotson finished third in Short Bus.
The final division Racing 3 was won by Steve Fernald sailing Pit Party. Finishing second was Strega sailed by William Cunningham of Round Pond and then Chester Jacobs of Southport sailing Hard Headed Woman.
Silver award trophy’s were presented at the awards ceremony on Sunday evening at BHYC. the race was supported by sponsors Hodgdon Boat Yards, Hendricks Gin, Central Distributors, Knickerbocker Woodworking, Smithwick and Marriner Insurance, Tindal & Callahan Real Estate, J. Edward Knight Insurance, Rocktide Inn and Baxter Brewing Company.
