The Boothbay Region Elementary School seventh grade girls and eighth grade boys basketball teams will play in the Busline League Large School championship games at Oceanside schools. The girls championship game, BRES vs. Oceanside Blue, will be held Friday, Jan. 29 at 3:45 p.m. at Oceanside East High School in Rockland. Oceanside East is the former Rockland High School and is located at 400 Broadway in Rockland. The boys championship game, BRES vs. Medomak, will be played Friday, Jan. 29 at Oceanside West High School. Oceanside West High school is the former Georges Valley High School and is located at 47 Valley St. in Thomaston. Game time is 5:15 p.m.

The eighth grade boys defeated Belfast on Tuesday and the seventh grade girls defeated Medomak Middle School at BRES on Wednesday, 33-10.

Two other BRES teams, the seventh grade boys and 7/8 grade girls, also hosted semifinal games on Wednesday afternoon. A 30-foot shot at the buzzer made by Medomak’s Ethan Reed knocked the Wildcat boys team out of the playoffs and the Belfast girls edged the BRES girls, 41-35.

Medomak 51 Boothbay 50

The seventh grade boys game was the game of the day on Wednesday as it was a hard-fought battle throughout.

With three seconds to play and the score tied at 48-48, Boothbay’s Kaeden Davis (28 points) made two free throws to give the Wildcats the lead, but Medomak moved the ball quickly over half-court where Reed put the ball in the hoop off the glass as the buzzer sounded.

The Wildcats fell behind eight points late in the third quarter, 35-27 and battled back to take leads in the fourth quarter, including a five-point lead, 44-39, with 2:46 remaining, and a four-point lead, 48-44, with 49 seconds remaining. But costly turnovers down the stretch allowed Medomak to catch up as they tied the score, 48-48, with 18 seconds to play.

Reed led Medomak with 18 points, Parker Morrison added nine and Brandon Starr had eight.

Davis, who had over a dozen rebounds to go along with his 28 points, was joined in double figures by Ben Pearce with 10. Sullivan Rice scored eight, and Chris Hamblett and Kaleb Ames each scored two.

BRES 33 Medomak 10

Sydney Welch scored 14 points as the BRES Wildcat seventh grade girls easily defeated Medomak and will move on to play in the championship game.

The game started slowly, with Boothbay holding only a 6-3 lead after the first quarter. But Boothbay went on to score 21 points in the next two quarters and held Medomak to just six points in those two frames and led 27-9 going into the fourth quarter.

Joining Welch in the scoring column was Kyla Taylor with nine points, Haley Abbott with four, and Rachel Gentry, Abby Little and Madison Hughes with two points each.

Belfast 41 BRES 35

This game was a battle to the end but Belfast held on for the win and a chance to play in the championship game on Saturday.

The game was tied at 33-33 with 3:30 to play but two baskets by Belfast gave them a 37-33 lead with just 1:13 to play. Boothbay had a couple of chances in the final 30 seconds but their shots didn’t fall.

Glory Blethen led Boothbay with 13 points, followed by Maddie Faulkingham with 12.

G. Fitzjuris led Belfast with 12 points, followed by H. Banks with eight.
